Blue, Pink and Gold Nutcracker Christmas Tree Decorating Tutorial

When it comes to Christmas tree decorating, how do you decide what goes on the tree? Do you follow a theme, use sentimental ornaments, set the kids loose with whatever they can find…? We’ve had so much fun in the past few years decorating the tree (see our red and gold dollar store tree, our white and silver dollar store tree, our woodland Christmas tree, and our original black and gold tree) — so this year we made it official and bought a beautiful white tree for some additional decorating. A white Christmas tree just begs for some beautiful pastels and a delicate vintage style, so, much to my girls’ delight, this tree got decorated in the style of the Nutcracker and the Four Realms!

We found an affordable white Christmas tree and gave it a Nutcracker-inspired decorating theme featuring ballerinas, candy lollipops, miniature nutcrackers, and more in pastel blue, blush pink, and rose gold. I was thrilled when I found this affordable white Christmas tree at Walmart. I did some shopping around since I really wanted a white tree, but I just couldn’t stomach paying upwards of $200-300 even for a beautiful tree. Then we scoured the stores for pastel blue, blush pink, and rose gold and found the loveliest candy, ballerina, and nutcracker ornaments. You could easily make a lot of these by hand, too, if you’re feeling crafty! Our Nutracker tree is non-traditional Christmas colors, but it really is so beautiful — the video doesn’t even do it justice! Plus, we’re teaming up with over TWENTY fellow bloggers to share new Christmas tutorials today for our second annual Creative Christmas challenge — be sure to watch the whole playlist below to see more, or scroll down or click here to see the full list of projects.

How to Decorate a White Nutcracker Christmas Tree

True to our original Christmas tree decorating tutorial, we started with the ribbon (which we also found at Walmart and our local At Home store). Yards of shimmery, glittery goodness. My girls and I may have squealed with delight when we found it! I like to tuck the ribbon back into the tree a bit to provide some color and texture but still be more of a backdrop for the ornaments.

Next is my favorite step: adding picks! We’ve added berries, flowers, anything that fits our color scheme in the past and for this year’s sparkly Nutcracker tree, we found some beautiful long feathery picks that added such nice texture to the tree! I also found a garland of shimmery gold fan kind of picks all together, so I just took it apart to use the picks separately on the tree. Never let the manufacturer’s assembly get in the way of my decorating! 😉 Plus, it was a better price to buy the garland and take it apart than buy individual picks.

I always start the ornaments with the largest ornaments, to distribute them evenly around the tree. It only takes a few to really fill out the tree nicely! My mini helpers and I used 6 large globe ornaments on this 7.5 foot tree, and then filled in the tree with the smaller globes and the other ornaments — some of which we found at the dollar store, score! I included sparkly feathery wings, pretty plush swans (there are swans in the Nutcracker, right?), small Dollar Tree nutcrackers that got a custom paint job, kitty ballerinas (because our kitty love MUST extend to the Christmas tree!), and some paper ballerinas that we made — I posted a kind of tutorial aaaages ago when I first made them, and they are perfect for the pink Nutcracker ballet tree this year! For the land of the sugar plum fairies, we added pink and blue swirly lollipops, ice cream cones, cupcakes — and of course, donuts! We also clipped in some gold and pink poinsettia style flowers and sparkly pink dragonflies that we found, because everything with wings is just magical!

We did all our shopping at three stores: Walmart, At Home, and Dollar Tree. Shopping 3 stores in our color scheme means that not all the blues and pinks and golds are exactly the same shade, which I think is perfect for adding some visual variety and depth to the tree! We also have both regular hanging ornaments, clip-in ornaments, and ornaments that are more just nested in the branches for variety.

What do you think of our finished glittery Nutcracker tree? As my daughter said, “Everything is so sparkly!” so we’ve now dubbed the tree sparkle-icious. Our lives will never be the same!

  1. Ahh, so gorgeous, I love the eclectic collection of ornaments you used, and the color scheme is so beautiful. I’ve wanted a white tree for so so long, I hope I can convince my hubby. I better show him your beautiful tree.

Thanks for inviting me to play along again this year!

p.s., your daughters are so adorable.
