Growing up with two teachers for parents, summer time was always family time. Since my parents didn’t have to take time off work, we made sure to go on a family vacation at least once each summer, even if it wasn’t a big trip. So naturally, summer time, for me, always brings up memories of traveling, and this month, I had that on the brain as I was putting together this travel themed moodboard.

Tips for Decorating with a Travel Theme

Here are some tips for getting a well-traveled look:

Don’t get too hung up on a theme.

The best approach to avoid the ‘room in a bag’ look is to let things evolve naturally. Sometimes when you’re traveling, the most memorable moments come from spontaneity, and decorating can be the same. Getting too hung up on a ‘theme’ can take the life out of your decor, making it feel too rigid and stuffy.

Go for a collected look.

A great way to avoid that overly themed look is to go for more of a collected-over-time vibe that has a more authentic travel feel to it. Pull one or two main colors out to carry through the space, but otherwise, look for pieces that have a subtle well-traveled aesthetic and let the room evolve around them.

Include some history.

Part of the fun of traveling is seeing all the historic landmarks and feeling like you’re experiencing a small part of that history. Bring this feeling into your space by incorporating a few vintage pieces into the decor. The authentic history of vintage or antique furniture will automatically make the room have a collected feeling, like it has a story to tell. And we all know that the best trips always result in a great story!
