This bunk bed was designed and handmade to fit into an out of the way corner, making sure that bulky furniture didn’t take up valuable floor space. The rest of the room features lots of open shelving and a lot of dresser storage to keep treasures safely in their spots.
Corner Beds – The long, rectangular shape of this room along with the placement of french doors and large windows made furniture layout a little less straightforward when planning for two kids. By placing identical beds in an “L” in one corner, wall space is fully utilized while the middle of the floor is kept free of clutter and bulk. The functionality of one under-bed drawer is lost, but there are other storage solutions added to the room to make up for it.
Crib Nook – Two boys shared this room originally, and it was cozy then. When a baby girl came along, they converted the closet to a nook for her crib, complete with shelving and decor to feminize her space and make it uniquely her own. Clothes were put in a dresser between the twin beds. While it’s a small room, it definitely works for three kids and there’s no lack of space.
Color Blocked Space – Define separate areas in a shared bedroom by decorating in two different but complimentary colors. Place a bookshelf or dresser for storage and division. Start with base colors for each side (in this case, yellow and turquoise) and add pops of the other colors throughout the whole space to make the look cohesive. Extra Long Bed – This room features an extra long platform that spans the length of the room. It’s long enough to fit two twin mattresses on it with some room between. This is a great solution for sleeping arrangements in a shared space, especially if it’s a narrow room and could benefit by having all the furniture against one wall. Though the bed butts up to the closet along the perpendicular wall, the doors slide apart, making it completely usable still.
Industrial Space for 3 – The space beneath the loft bed in this room was just large enough for a king sized mattress, placed perpendicular to the twin above so it juts into the room. With three young boys in this space, it’s the perfect solution as it eliminates headboards, footboards, and bed frames that take up valuable real estate. The steel frame of the loft was the perfect inspiration for the industrial decor and storage – a chest with bins for toys and two metal racks, one with metal toolboxes for small treasures and collections and one with galvanized buckets for stuffed animals. The kids have enough storage and space to sleep and play – even with three in one room!
Above Bed Shelving – At first glance, this room seems as if it’s not big enough for one child and their accompanying “stuff,” let alone two. When one of them is a girl and one a boy, making this tiny space work for both seems an insurmountable challenge. By placing the beds next to each other, but separated by a chest of drawers, there’s a clear division of space. But what makes this room really work well is the above bed storage – a wall of shelves above each bed for storing special treasures and toys. Making use of the architecture already present in the space, the beds and shelves look like expensive built-ins.
Built-Ins On Both Ends – A narrow room like this is best utilized by placing the furniture together against one long wall. This can be challenging when trying to add everything necessary – like dressers and shelves along with two beds. This room does it with built-ins – on both sides of the room. One side is built-in bunk beds with closed storage/cabinets on both ends, and open shelving filling in the remaining space along the wall. The other wall is a combination of open and closed shelving, so there’s no need for dressers or bookshelves. Everything has a spot.
Privacy Partition – Perhaps your kids would appreciate a bit more privacy to their separate areas. You can accomplish this in nearly any sized bedroom by utilizing some kind of room divider. The best room divider for a kids’ bedroom will incorporate plenty of storage, as does this large shelf with cubbies. Putting pegboard on one side of the shelf allows for hanging storage and even more separation.
5 Kids, 1 Room – You’ll never believe it, but there are 5 boys in this room. 5 of them! And it works. The furniture is kept to a minimum – two small bookshelves, two sets of bunk beds and one toddler bed. No dressers. No desks. With the bunk beds pushed into the corner in an “L”, it gives the look (and space-saving) of built-in bunks. There are shelves and bins in the closets and under beds for clothing, so no dressers are needed. A clever solution to keep from feeling too stuffed, even with a herd of boys!
Built-In Bunks – This is an amazing space for 5 girls. One wall was changed into built-in bunk beds – with a set of stairs in between. Each bed is outfitted with a curtain to pull for privacy, a shelf for books and a lamp. It’s basically like sleeping in a fort, every night. Below the bunks are oversized drawers for toy storage. There’s a nook for a dresser built-in across from the beds (which is actually three Ikea dressers put together, but you’d never know it) and on one short wall, they created a closet by hanging curtains along a track in the ceiling. It’s comfy, it’s bright and cheery and, surprisingly, not at all cramped.
