This is the time of year that we all wish we were lying on a tropical beach somewhere, am I right? Sadly, that’s not always possible, but with the right decor, you can at least get a bit of that tropical vibe at home. I definitely had some vacation dreaming on the brain when I was putting together my moodboard for this month:

Tips for Tropical Decorating

Here are a few tips for getting some tropical flair even when you can’t be at the beach:

Light and bright.

Tropical decor is definitely one of those styles that can turn ‘themey’ pretty easily. You start out hoping for a relaxing island vibe, and end up with an over the top tropical tourist trap of a room instead. To avoid feeling like you’re living in a theme park, aim for the feeling of the tropics, rather than an overabundance of cliché tropical print items. Keep the room light and bright. Use vivid colors that evoke the flora of the islands. And above all, keep it relaxed and welcoming.

Lots of texture.

One way to get an island vibe without cheesy decor is to use texture to your advantage. Natural elements like wood, wicker, and bamboo can do a lot to give a space a casual, island touch. This can obviously be incorporated in furniture, but don’t overlook smaller items, like picture frames, when putting your space together. Accent all those warm neutrals with some crisp white accessories, and you’ll be well on your way to tropical living.

Go green.

Finally, you really can’t pull off a convincing tropical space without live plants. In this case, more is more. Look for large leafed varieties, and compliment your real plants with a few subtle palm leaf prints to top everything off and bring home the islands for yourself.

  1. It’s not summer, but I love this! Tropical or not, I definitely need some plants around the house. All I have is a cactus because all the other ones have died 🙁 I am terrible at keeping plants alive, so that just means I have to work extra hard.
