Farmhouse Wall Rack Tutorial

Today I want to share with you an easy, low cost way to keep that pile of clothes at bay.

The Weathered Fox Farmhouse Wall Rack. Rustic Bedroom Organizer

You know the pile I’m talking about. It could be on your bed, draped over your bedpost, on the floor (gasp!), a chair or a dresser. You think if you just got rid of the thing you throw your clothes on, you’ll be rid of that cursed pile forever!

But it’s just not that simple. You’ll find another place to throw those clothes, because the place isn’t the problem, its the habit. And if your habit doesn’t change, the pile will haunt you forever.

That’s where this wall rack comes in.

I needed a way to break my habit of throwing clothes into the pile, and after not being able to find a cost effective rack that was large enough to fill this void, I made one myself…in ten minutes… for less than $10. Problem solved!

Made from a couple of pallet slats, this simple DIY farmhouse wall rack will help keep clothes, scarves, hats, jackets and more organized and off the floor. In just ten minutes and for under $10, too!

Materials Needed to DIY a Farmhouse Wall Rack

Here is what I used to create my farmhouse wall rack. Feel free to adjust the materials for your style and need.

  • Two pieces of 1×3 pallet board, or you can buy new boards at your local hardware store. Cut to the length you desire.
  • scraps of 1×2, or one 6 foot piece will be more than enough
  • Drill and Bit set
  • Stud Finder, or a drywall mounting kit
  • 1 1/4 inch screws
  • 3 inch screws
  • your favorite cabinet knobs or hooks
  • your choice of stain, paint, or wax

All of the materials are available at your local hardware stores. I was able to use scraps from other projects I had lying around. I found my knobs at Home Goods, but other stores like Target and Amazon, and even Lowes or Home Depot have a surprisingly great selection and they’ll ship to your door!

Steps to building a Farmhouse Wall Rack

1) Using a fine grit sandpaper, sand your wood pieces to remove any sharp edges or splinter. At this point may be a good time to finish the pieces of wood to your liking. I used a dark wax by Annie Sloan to age my wood, but you can paint or stain, stencil to your hearts desire.

2) With your cut pieces of wood side by side, measure the width, and cut 3 1×2 boards (attachment pieces) to match that width. Using your 1 1/4 inch screws, secure your attachment pieces perpendicular to your long boards.

I placed one on each end, and one in the center. Feel free to add or subtract depending on the length of your wall rack.

3) Decide the placement of your knobs. I bought 8 knobs, and scattered them diagonally around the board. This way they aren’t lined up under each other, which allows for more hanging space.

4) Drill pilot holes for your new knobs, and attach them to your boards.

5) Use your stud finder to mark to location of your studs in the wall, and screw 3 inch screws through one side of your wall rack into the studs. Level your rack and repeat on the other side.

6) Banish the pile forever! Choose now to hang your clothes instead of throwing them in a pile. I even went so far as to buy hanging baskets for my rack so I could store my belts, lotions, cosmetics, or any other items that tend to clutter up my surfaces.

It’s seriously THAT easy. Within 10 minutes I created a solution that saves loads of time, and let’s be honest, my sanity too! If you loved this project, pin it for later!
